PhD Postgraduate Research: School of Social Sciences
Sociology examines how societies are organised, and how class, gender, ethnicity, institutions and culture shape people's lives and choices. Students learn to gather and interpret evidence about social patterns, and to question explanations that seem obvious. Graduates often work in research, policy, social services, human resources, media and the non-profit sector.
PhD Postgraduate Research: School of Health and Social Wellbeing
Social work supports people facing hardship — family difficulty, disability, poor mental health, poverty, abuse or needs that come with age — and connects them with services and protection. Human development, law, policy and ethics join the practical skills of assessment and intervention. Graduates often work in child and family services, mental health, community organisations and local government.
PhD Postgraduate Research: School of Engineering
Engineering and technology cover the design, building and improvement of the systems, machines and processes societies depend on. Whatever the specialism, the method stays recognisable: apply mathematics and science, model the problem, test, and refine within real constraints of cost, safety and materials. Graduates work across industry, infrastructure, energy and technology development.
PhD Postgraduate Research: School of Education and Childhood
Education explores how people learn, and how teaching, curriculum, assessment and school systems shape that learning. The subject draws on psychology and sociology while staying close to what happens in classrooms and institutions. Graduates often work in teaching and training, curriculum development, educational research, policy and administration.
PhD Postgraduate Research: School of Computing and Creative Technologies
At its core, computer science is about computation: algorithms, data structures, programming languages, operating systems and the theory beneath them. Mathematical reasoning and hands-on building reinforce each other throughout. Graduates often become software engineers, or move into data, security, research, product development and technical roles in almost any industry.
PhD Postgraduate Research: School of Arts
Arts and humanities is a broad grouping covering literature, history, philosophy, languages and the arts — the study of how people have made meaning and expressed it. What binds it together is reading closely, weighing evidence and arguing well in writing. Graduates often move into media, education, publishing, culture, public administration and communication roles.
PhD Postgraduate Research: School of Architecture and Environment
Architecture and design concern the shaping of buildings, interiors and objects, balancing function, structure, cost and the way people actually live and move. Studio projects, drawing, modelling and critique sit alongside history, theory and technical study. Graduates often work in architectural and design practices, planning and development, visualisation and construction-related roles.
PhD Postgraduate Research: School of Applied Sciences
Why a metal bends, a ceramic shatters or a polymer creeps comes down to structure at the atomic scale. This field links that structure to properties and performance, and to how materials are made, tested and selected. Graduates often work in aerospace, energy, electronics, biomedical devices and materials research.
PhD Postgraduate Research: Bristol Law School
Law examines the rules that govern people, organisations and states, and the reasoning used to interpret and apply them.
